Black river gorges
Discover the Black River Gorges Nature Park, where you will see many endangered species of plants and animals and will get a breathtaking view of Alexandra waterfalls. The Black River Gorges National Park is the largest protected forest of Mauritius. Providing over 50 km of magnificent and yet challenging hiking trails. This is the best way to get into the deep nature of Mauritius whether you prefer a hardcore climb to the highest peak or a gentler ramble through the forest. This nature reserve provides over 50 km of trails where you can trek and explore the rich and diverse flora and fauna of the island. The enchanting, wild expanse of thick forest is home to over 300 species of flowering plants and 9 species of birds unique to Mauritius, including the famous pink pigeon, which is staging a very gradual comeback from the brink of extinction
Seven colored earth
Another thing that you will adore is the Seven Coloured Earth found in Chamarel. The seven colored earth is a natural phenomenon and a prominent tourist attraction. The colors evolved through conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. It is a relatively small area ofsand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow), discovered in 1879. And what is more fascinating is the fact that if you mix the colored earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers. And you may also be puzzled as the colors might play tricks on you and may appear to be shadows.
Trou aux Cerfs dormant volcano
Trou aux Cerfs (also known as Murr’s Volcano) is a dormant volcano with a well-defined cone and crater. It is 605 m (1,985 ft) high and located in Curepipe Mauritius The first thing you will notice when you arrive at this amazing site is the huge crater and crater lake that sits, uncharacteristically, surrounded by beautifully thick, lush indigenous vegetation and giant green pine trees The island holds many “secret” spots and underestimated sights, perfect for the traveler who enjoys taking the road less travelled. Grand bassin
Ganga Talao or the Grand Bassin is an important pilgrimage site. It is a natural lake within an extinct volcano crater. According to a mythological story it is believed that the water here is sourced from the sacred Ganges River in India Have a look at the smaller shrines and colourful statues dedicated to other popular Hindu deities. You might even catch a glimpse of giant eels and some fish in the lake or wild monkeys happily munching on coconuts.
Lighthouse Albion
With an iconic red and white stripes from top to bottom, the Cave Point lighthouse was inaugurated in 1910 and is still intact. To access the top of the lighthouse, you will have to climb up the 98-step wooden and cast iron staircase. You might wonder why you should bother with climbing all the way to the top, but be sure that the effort is so worth the climb. You will be rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of the entire coastline from Pointe aux Sables to Flic en Flac. For those who are afraid of heights, a walk along the trail that runs up to the lighthouse does also offer breathtaking views over the shoreline you will also find under the cliffs the entrance to a cave which is inhabited by birds and bats.
Le morne Brabant
Le morne Brabant is a beautiful and outstanding place to do hiking in Mauritius. While climbing the mountain, the wonderful sea view that you see is overwhelming. You’ll come across different species of flora. After hiking, you can relax at le morne beach and enjoy the beautiful and amazing scenery.
Maconde viewpoint
Standing in the village of Baie du Cap, is one of the most famous viewpoints of Mauritius. As known the Baie Du Cap Coastal Road which is ranked as the 10th most beautiful roads in the world, the source of its beauty is mainly due to the Maconde viewpoint. Salt pans in Tamarin
The Tamarin Salt Pans are amongst the oldest salt farms in Mauritius dating back to the 18th century. Set at the foot of the La Tourelle mountain, they are located at the entrance of the village of Tamarin, in the Southwest of the island The Tamarin Salt Pans are the last place in Mauritius where sea salt is harvested in a traditional and artisanal way, and that, in a close cooperation with the families of the surrounding villages. The pans and storerooms are made from volcanic pavers and all handcrafted. Discover how seawater evaporates into salt crystals and witness a century-old traditional method for harvesting it. The saltpans operate all year round and harvests are subject to weather conditions.
